VMC855 Vertical Machining Center User Manual – Operation, Setup and Maintenance

The Handemo VMC855 is a BT40 vertical machining center built for precision milling in mold making, automotive parts and general manufacturing. This manual covers installation, daily operation, parameter reference, maintenance and common troubleshooting so your workshop gets stable, repeatable results from day one.

1. Unpacking and Installation

Place the machine on a level concrete foundation and use the leveling bolts to bring the bed within 0.02 mm/m. Connect the power supply with the correct voltage (check the nameplate), and ground the machine properly. Keep at least 800 mm of clearance around the machine for maintenance access.

2. First Power-On and Reference Return

After power-on, run the machine in manual mode and perform reference return on all axes (X, Y, Z). Verify that the tool changer parks correctly and the spindle orients to the home position. Listen for abnormal noise before continuing.

3. Workpiece Setup

Clean the table and workpiece contact surface, then clamp the workpiece with the correct torque. Use a dial indicator to check parallelism; adjust the soft jaws or fixture until runout is within 0.01 mm. Set the work offset (G54) based on your part datum.

4. Tool Setup and Offsets

Install tools with proper taper cleaning. Measure each tool length with the tool presetter or by touching off, and enter the offset into the control. Confirm the tool magazine positions match the program tool numbers to avoid collisions.

5. Program Verification

Before the first run, verify the program with graphics simulation in the control. Run a single-block test with a reduced feed override (10–20%) and confirm clearances. Then gradually increase to normal cutting parameters.

6. Production Cutting

Use the recommended cutting parameters for your material and tooling. For steel, start with moderate depth of cut and check chip formation. Monitor spindle load and listen for vibration; adjust feed and speed if chatter appears.

Preventive Maintenance Schedule

Daily

Clean the table and way covers; check oil level in the lubrication unit; empty the coolant tank filter; wipe the spindle taper.

Weekly

Check and clean the coolant filter; inspect way wipers for damage; verify air pressure for the tool changer; check limit switch operation.

Monthly

Lubricate the ball screws and guideways per the manual; inspect the spindle belt tension; check electrical cabinet cooling fan; verify axis backlash.

Every 6 Months

Replace hydraulic/lubrication oil filters; inspect the spindle bearings for noise or heat; check the tool magazine alignment; verify all safety interlocks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the machine alarm on reference return?

Check the home switch position and the limit switch wiring. Ensure the axis is not blocked and the servo is enabled. Restart after clearing the alarm.

How do I reduce surface roughness?

Check tool wear, increase spindle speed or reduce feed, verify workholding rigidity, and confirm the spindle taper is clean.

What coolant should I use?

Use a water-soluble emulsion coolant at the recommended concentration (usually 5–8%). For aluminum, a higher concentration reduces chip welding.
