1. Installation and Leveling

Set the lathe on a solid foundation and level the bed within 0.02 mm/m in both directions. Secure with anchor bolts. Connect power with correct phase sequence and check the coolant and lubrication systems.

2. Chuck and Workpiece Setup

Clean the chuck jaws and workpiece. For bar work, set the bar feeder or manual feed correctly. For chuck work, clamp with adequate torque and verify concentricity with a dial indicator. Set the program zero (G54) at the part face.

3. Tool Setup

Mount turning tools with the correct center height. Set tool offsets using the tool presetter or touch-off cycle. Verify the turret indexes to the correct station before automatic operation.

4. Programming Basics

Use standard G-code: G00 rapid positioning, G01 linear cutting, G02/G03 arcs, G71 roughing cycle and G70 finishing cycle. Always simulate the program on screen before running.

5. First Part Run

Run the first part in single block with a low feed override. Check the first cut dimensions, then adjust offsets. Verify thread cutting parameters before threading operations.

6. Production Turning

Select cutting speed based on workpiece material: carbide tools typically run 150–300 m/min for steel, 200–400 m/min for aluminum. Adjust depth of cut and feed for stable chip control.

Preventive Maintenance Schedule

Daily

Clean the chuck, turret and way covers; check hydraulic oil level; drain water from the air filter; check coolant concentration.

Weekly

Lubricate the turret and tailstock; clean the chip conveyor; check chuck jaw wear; verify the door interlocks.

Monthly

Check belt tension; inspect the spindle oil level; clean electrical cabinet filters; verify X/Z backlash.

Every 6 Months

Replace hydraulic oil and filters; inspect spindle bearings; check the turret clamping force; verify all safety devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fix taper on turned parts?

Adjust the tailstock offset or check the headstock alignment. Verify the tool center height and check for worn guideways.

Why does the turret not index correctly?

Check the turret hydraulic pressure, the detent position, and the proximity sensors. Clean the coupling surfaces.

What is the recommended coolant for stainless steel?

Use a high-performance water-soluble coolant with extreme-pressure additives at 8–10% concentration.
